120 film developing and scanning: choosing a lab
A suitable 120 film lab supports both your film process and your camera's frame format. Ask about scan pixel dimensions, preferred corrections and how negatives are cut and returned. High resolution alone does not establish the quality of a scan.

120 is a film format, not a chemical process
A 120 roll may contain colour negative, traditional black-and-white or slide film. C-41, black-and-white and E-6 require their appropriate processing. Check the label. Film type determines the chemistry; larger film alone does not require a different colour process.
Tell the lab your camera's frame format
A 120 camera may produce 6 × 4.5, 6 × 6, 6 × 7 or 6 × 9 images. Mention unusual formats such as panoramas. Ask about scan output for your format: a square negative should not be unintentionally cropped into a 2:3 image.
What makes a good medium-format scan?
Focus, film flatness, original exposure and colour or tonal adjustments all matter. More pixels allow larger prints but cannot remove motion blur. For large prints, testing an important detail can be more useful than comparing resolution figures alone.

Many regular C-41 and black-and-white orders usually take approximately 1–2 working days; special processes may follow a different schedule.
Packing and returning negatives
Keep the roll tightly wound with its backing paper and sealing tab intact. Do not unroll it; protect it from pressure, moisture and heat. Discuss cut strips or an uncut roll before processing. Check collection and return options in your order.
Frequently asked questions
Are all 120 scans 4000 × 6000 pixels?
No. A single rectangular pixel specification cannot automatically apply to every medium-format frame. Aspect ratio and the available scan option determine output. Ask for the exact dimensions for your camera format.
Can I order developing without scans?
Yes, our order service includes developing only. This suits photographers who scan themselves or make darkroom prints. Check the current options for your film process.
